Spacing discs and another thing
by Feltenix on Jun.05, 2010, under Lathe, Turning
One of the last parts I was working on with the lathe required me to bore out a large internal diameter. This required a spacing disc (read washer) to prevent the tool from damaging itself or the chuck.
This is the washer before I started turning it down to the right diameter and proper thickness.
With the washer chucked up using the center hole, I found it would jump off the chuck if I wasn’t careful. Whenever it would jump off the washer would be quite hot, so it was obviously due to thermal expansion. Because it is just a washer there was no real concern over thermal effects and damage due to escape. The part on the left in the background is the part that needs the washer in order to continue construction. The other is actually several near complete parts assembled together.
Here you can see the washer in place between the chuck and part.
Here is the part in its almost completed state.

It’s nice to see you making progress. Can you post some sort of progress chart or bar? Maybe a wiremesh diagram with the parts that you have made highlighted.

I probably won’t be making any sort of progress bar or chart; mostly because I am rather close to being done. The posts are a month or more behind my actual progress. I definitely won’t be posting a wiremesh as it would reveal how the engine is made. I want to keep that a secret for various reasons.
